How Development of the Helios® TCS Led to Creation of the World’s Most Efficient Wye Strainer

The Genesis of Helios Tube Cleaning System

The Helios Tube Cleaning System® was designed to offer unparalleled reliability in automatic tube cleaning systems. Launched in 2014, the development of the Helios involved extensive modeling, rigorous hydraulics lab testing, and numerous operational design adjustments to perfect its performance. 

Enhancing Flow Dynamics

One of the critical components of the Helios system is its ball collection mechanism, which requires optimal flow dynamics to function efficiently. Our team invested significant effort in studying and improving these dynamics, resulting in an exceptional track record for the Helios system.  To date, the Helios has operated with a 99% reliability rate over millions of cleaning cycles. 

However, because the Helios is integrated within larger central plant and district cooling facilities, there are any number of variables that can impact performance. Several Innovas customers faced macro fouling issues in their condenser circuits and sought solutions to mitigate the impact of macro debris that blocked condenser tubes. Responding to this need, Innovas initiated application engineering efforts in 2021 to adapt its technology advancements from cleaning ball capture to macro-debris filtration.

The Birth of Triton™ Debris Strainers

In 2022, Innovas Technologies® introduced the first debris (Wye) strainer to the University of Arizona. The strainer’s performance exceeded expectations, prompting the university to place additional orders. This success marked a significant milestone in our journey.

Building on this momentum, we launched the Triton™ debris strainer line in early 2024. This new line includes both fabricated and custom Y and T strainers, designed for use in commercial and industrial applications. Each Triton strainer is built to ASME standards, ensuring exceptional quality and reliability.

Superior Manufacturing Processes

Our Triton™ high-efficiency Y strainers are manufactured using advanced robotic welding processes and in-house sheet metal fabrication. Additionally, we employ proprietary coatings to set a new standard for quality and corrosion prevention in the industry.

The World’s Most Efficient Wye Strainer

Triton™, developed from our focused research on the impact of pressure drop cooling system pumping costs, features unique and proprietary designs that minimize flow turns/obstructions making it the most efficient Y strainer in the world. Traditional Wye strainers use a bridge wall or plate to retain the strainer screen and divert flow, which significantly disrupts fluid flow, causes pressure loss, and increases pump energy consumption. In contrast, Triton™ Y Strainers employ a proprietary design that enables streamlined fluid flow, resulting in much lower pump energy requirements. Additionally, Triton™ Y Strainers offer a screen surface area up to 20% larger than competing fabricated Wye strainers, allowing for longer operation times between cleanings.
