Innovas Delivers Advanced Carbon Management Technology

Why Carbon Management Technology Matters

Carbon management technology is crucial for district cooling, power generation, and industrial operations. It helps reduce carbon emissions and supports the development of more sustainable climate control systems. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently committed up to $54.4 million to advance carbon management solutions. This funding will support technologies that capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial and power generation sources, or even directly from the atmosphere, for permanent storage or conversion into valuable products like fuels and chemicals.

Reducing Electricity Consumption to Lower Carbon Footprint

Capturing CO2 is one way to reduce fossil fuel use, but there are existing technologies that can decrease fossil fuel consumption from the start. The biggest demand for fossil fuels in district cooling, industrial, and power generation systems comes from the need for electricity. Most electricity is generated in thermal power plants that burn coal, oil, or natural gas to produce steam, which drives turbines connected to electric generators.

Improving the efficiency of these cooling systems can reduce the electricity required to power them. One way to do this is by enhancing the flow of water through cooling systems, which reduces the energy needed for pumps. This can be achieved by preventing the buildup of biofilm or scale in heat exchangers and cooling towers, which often occurs due to water quality issues. Keeping these systems clean ensures better flow rates, allowing district cooling systems to operate more efficiently with less electricity.

Innovas Technologies’ Contribution to Carbon Management

In 2014, Innovas Technologies introduced the Helios Automatic Tube Cleaning System® (TCS). Whether in universities, hospitals, commercial buildings, or data centers, chillers are vital for HVAC services and process cooling. While water-cooled chillers are highly effective, they often face problems with tube fouling, which hampers their efficiency. The award-winning Helios TCS offers a breakthrough solution by eliminating tube fouling through a fully automatic, mechanical cleaning process.

The Helios TCS continuously cleans heat exchangers by circulating sponge balls through the tubes at set intervals, preventing the buildup of residue, deposits, and biofilm. Over the past decade, Helios TCS installations have successfully completed millions of cleaning cycles, maintaining an operational reliability rate above 99.97% without any interruptions to the cooling process.

The Importance of Carbon Management Technology

Carbon management technology plays a key role in making industrial and power generation systems more sustainable. Products like the Helios TCS® and the Triton High Efficiency Y Strainer™ enhance the efficiency of existing technologies, offering practical, real-world solutions that are easy for plant operators to implement. Additionally, the energy savings achieved through these technologies lead to a quick return on investment, making them cost-effective solutions for reducing carbon emissions.
